Library of Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-42, Chandigarh

PG Government College for Girls, Sector-42, affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh, is a premier institute of higher education in Northern India. With its imposing edifice, majestic building- blocks and rich infrastructure, it caters to the academic and professional needs of girls not only from Chandigarh and adjoining rural areas but also from different states of India. Established in a school building in Sector-19 in the year 1982 with Arts and Commerce faculties, the college shifted to its present campus in the year 1987. Since then, it has been making strides in terms of academic and infrastructural up-gradation which has enabled it to emerge as a fore-runner in Women Empowerment and Education. 

The college has a big library which has a vast compendium of 41,000 Subject and Reference books.




Besides this, the library subscribes to 46 magazines, 74 subject journals and 18 newspapers in Hindi, English and Punjabi to keep the students and staff updated with current affairs home and abroad.



With INFLIBNET facility to access E-Books & Journal. OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) facility is available in the library using which the staff and students can search the books through various approaches like an author, title, accession number, publisher, subject, or a combination of these.



The college has a JAWS Software that caters to the needs of visually challenged students. Internet and Photocopier facility is available in the Library for the convenience of the students & faculty.


Separate Room for Magazines, Journals and Newspaper is also available.


Three library activities were held during the year i.e. Essays writing contest, Library Quiz and Readers Club to inculcate reading habits among the students.

Orientation programmes are also held for new students.

Mrs Anita Mahajan is Librarian of the college and has experience of about 36 years in this field. She is incharge of this library since 2006.

Mr Balwinder Singh is also Librarian of the college.

Library of Post Graduate Government College Sector 46, Chandigarh

Established in 1982, Postgraduate Government College, Sector 46, is relatively young but offers an array of fine higher educational options in various streams namely Arts, Commerce and Computer Applications, with Honours in selected subjects. The college also offers masters in Commerce. Accredited with A by NAAC, the college has the faculty with impeccable credentials and upgraded knowledge that prepares the students to become diligent citizens and hold leadership positions.

The college motto----Light is Life----stands for the spark that ignites the fire within; the energy, intelligence and enthusiasm crackling to life, through quality education and learning, which is, indeed, our distinctive attribute.

Library of Post Graduate Government College, Sector-46 has been set up on a modernized platform. Most of the library's activities are computerized using "LlBSYS", an integrated library software. The library has installed a local area network (LAN) within the library. The library has prepared a database of books. One terminal in circulation has been installed for access to the OPAC of library holdings for users. 



The college library caters intellectual as well as the general reading needs of its reader in an ideal and reader’s friendly environment. Approximately 250 readers visit the library every day. The spacious, independent library block (926.97 Sq. Meters. in the area) with the provision of open access system is well equipped with 45377 books which include textbooks, reference books, general books and non-book materials. The Library subscribes about 31 Journals, 47 magazines and 14 Newspapers. The library has Annual Membership of N-List for free access of E-Journals and E-Books. 

Best Practices

Library Orientation Programme:

Library Department Organizes Library Orientation Programme for the Freshers at the beginning of the academic session. This programme aims at educating the new students about the important role of the library in widening their mental horizon. 

Book Exhibitions:

Exhibitions are also arranged periodically on various topics. “Know Your Library” Book Exhibition is being organized at the beginning of the Academic Session with an endeavour to make the students aware of the collection of the library. New books are displayed at the Display Window near the entrance of the Library to bring these to the notice of readers. 



Library-Related Competitions:

As part of the readers’ motivation programme library department organizes Book /Reference Hunting, Essay Writing, Book cover Making, Slogan Writing, Collage making competitions every Year. 


Book Bank Facility: 

Library provides book bank facility to needy and deserving students for the whole session. The issued textbooks have to be returned after the annual examination.

SC/ST Grant Facility: 

SC/ST Grant for free books and stationery is distributed among the SC/ST Students.

Wall Magazine: 


To exhibit students’ talent library maintain a wall magazine.

Display Boards:
Audio-visual section of the library displays current information on various aspects e.g. information relating to health, career, religion, Amazing facts etc
